The Pieces We Won't Let Go Of

I just came across this picture and it makes me smile.  It was taken a few years ago, on a day when our son Graham was crammed in the back of the truck with a whole bunch of furniture that we had out on loan from our friend Michael de Angelis.  We had shown it all to a client of ours, but the pieces in the photo did not make the cut and were being returned.

For whatever reason, Graham took an intense liking to this one particular table.  He clutched it tightly and was crying because he did not want to see it go away.  I have never seen him feel so strongly about a piece of furniture before or since.  Something about it resonated with him, and he wanted to keep it badly.

How about you?  Do you own a piece that you would never part with?  What is it?  Why do you feel that way about it?  Don’t be shy.  We would love to hear from you!

Spring for Color

Most of the images on our site have been pretty monochromatic so far, but that's about to change!  Not that there is anything wrong with black, white & wood, but Spring is here and our flowers are showing us how nice purple and green and pink can be.  Stacy has been working on some new pieces that are going to be super cool.  We have a new line coming out this summer that will be available in almost any color or pattern you can dream of.  Please tell us (publicly or privately) which colors you would like to see us offer.  Let's brighten our worlds!

A Day for Green

Happy St. Paddy's Day everybody!  We wish the luck of the Irish to you all and hope you get to enjoy as much of your favorite beverages as you want!

Stacy made this four-leaf "clover" chest of drawers design just for today.  (This is a sneak peak of something we haven't talked about yet...More on this new line of ours soon!)

Today is also a good day to plug our friends at the Sustainable Furnishings Council.  These people, and several other member firms we have spoken to, not only talk the talk, but they all walk the walk too.  They are about being "green," without the "greenwashing."  The SFC's logo sits at the bottom of our pages here, showing that for us, every day is a green day.

Made in Mexico

Here are some pieces created by our friends at Fabrica.  The desk top is steel with automotive paint, and is super clean.  The chair is a prototype, but the quality of the design and fabrication are as good as anything we get North of the border.  If you haven't heard of them yet, you will.  You can see them at the ICFF show in New York this coming May.  Our neighbors are doing a lot of great work.

Back to the Future

Here is some amazing precast concrete.  Not only is it complex, it's curved.  What I find even more special is that they bothered to do this not on the front, but on the BACK of the building, where it only benefits the residents themselves and their immediate neighbors.  This was the view from the kitchen window of the apartment I stayed in in Mexico City.  The laundry is a good indicator of scale!

The sad part is that we don't make precast concrete, or much of anything with any architectural intricacy, like this anymore.

The exciting part is that in the very near future we will be 3D printing entire facades like this.  The whole idea of 'craft' is about to change quite radically, and we will be seeing a lot of new ways of doing things.

The possibilities are endless, but it's also great to have examples like this to follow.

Coffee with a Tree

I was in Mexico City last week, for the first of what we hope will be many visits.  The weather there right now is perfect, so the locals throw all their doors open and leave them that way.  They really know how to blur the boundary between outside and inside.

This is the bookstore and cafe across the street from the Anthropology museum, built right around an existing tree.  Even though the building sits in a park with plenty of trees, they still chose to keep this one.

This space would not be anywhere near so rich, engaging, and inviting without that tree there.    And yes, the doors were wide open, too.  Lovely.
