This week saw what I think was the most beautiful concrete pour of our career. The project is an addition to a cabin overlooking the South Yuba River. The addition sits squarely on a large boulder next to the cabin and the foundations are pinned into the rock. Windows will face the river and give wonderful views. It was a perfect morning, everything went smoothly, and Tom and Maru, the owners, were happy to help with trowelling. After months of planning, it’s great to see how well this project will sit on its site. We can’t wait to see the next phases!

It may have been a last minute decision for us to show our work at the first WestEdge San Francisco show, but it was worth it. Many thanks to the 3,000 of you who showed up to see it and speak with us! We made some new friends.
As always, our Watermark cabinet got a lot of attention, both in person and on the web. Our friends at WestEdge are great at getting the media to take notice. We also brought along our biggest Ten-71 plant container, with a very large plant that is now the newest member of our family. It likes us to talk to it every day… We haven't posted anything in a long time, and you may be wondering, "Why?" Well, we moved! Both our home and our office. This was a lot of work, which I'm sorry to say took our focus away from talking to you. We now have two locations from which to better operate: in the Sierra foothills (Gold Country, towards Lake Tahoe,) and in San Francisco proper for our urban base. We are now settling in and taking advantage of what both locations have to offer.
Meanwhile, our work has been continuing uninterrupted. We're designing architecture and we're building furniture and we're helping people feel better about their surroundings. So no, we did not run out of ideas! Far from it! More soon. This week, let's look at one element: our pull-out desk drawer. It tucks away nicely when not in use, but when inspiration strikes, it is there for you. We like to think it would be used to compose love letters. Or at least love emails, since it holds a laptop or keyboard perfectly and there is a gap at the back of the cabinet to fish the wiring through. If you listen to vinyl, it's a great place to keep a turntable, too. But please keep a love letter or two in there, too.
Sometimes good things come in small packages, so today we're keeping it simple: A bedside cabinet. Asymmetry works well for books, lamps, electronic devices, glasses of water, sleeping pills, and all those other things we feel the need to keep near us. Our Mixi parts let you do this easily. We like blue, too. Do you? Two speakers - great sound! Five colors - great looks! Shall we put it in the living room, the dining room, or the bedroom? Hmmm....
For fun, we are going to be regularly posting new cabinets. So many combinations are possible. This one could work either in an office or a living room. Show what you want to show and hide what you need to hide. Credenzas are your friends!
Out of 400+ exhibitors displaying 2,000+ products, we are pleased to report that we won the Dwell on Design Award for Furniture for 2014! We didn't see it coming. With all the work we've been doing, we probably can't see straight anyway. This is an honor, and we are super thrilled! We want to thank everyone who has helped us get here, and to all of you for cheering us on. It means a lot to us. Cheers! |
