As always, our Watermark cabinet got a lot of attention, both in person and on the web. Our friends at WestEdge are great at getting the media to take notice. We also brought along our biggest Ten-71 plant container, with a very large plant that is now the newest member of our family. It likes us to talk to it every day…
It may have been a last minute decision for us to show our work at the first WestEdge San Francisco show, but it was worth it. Many thanks to the 3,000 of you who showed up to see it and speak with us! We made some new friends.

This week, let's look at one element: our pull-out desk drawer. It tucks away nicely when not in use, but when inspiration strikes, it is there for you. We like to think it would be used to compose love letters. Or at least love emails, since it holds a laptop or keyboard perfectly and there is a gap at the back of the cabinet to fish the wiring through. If you listen to vinyl, it's a great place to keep a turntable, too. But please keep a love letter or two in there, too.
Sometimes good things come in small packages, so today we're keeping it simple: A bedside cabinet. Asymmetry works well for books, lamps, electronic devices, glasses of water, sleeping pills, and all those other things we feel the need to keep near us. Our Mixi parts let you do this easily. We like blue, too. Do you? Two speakers - great sound! Five colors - great looks! Shall we put it in the living room, the dining room, or the bedroom? Hmmm....
For fun, we are going to be regularly posting new cabinets. So many combinations are possible. This one could work either in an office or a living room. Show what you want to show and hide what you need to hide. Credenzas are your friends!
And now for the Piece de Resistance - the Watermark cabinet! This entire cabinet, made from our Mixi components, is finished to simulate an antique Turkish marbled paper from the inside of an old book binding. The drawer pulls are also custom made and finished to match the base. We hope you agree that the result is truly special!
Here is a nice example of the type of piece that can made using our new Mixi components.
It also features several of the accessories we will be offering. Starting on the left, we have a wine rack insert, made to fit into our standard boxes. No tools required! Next we have our audio speakers. After a number of iterations, we have a design that not only looks good by perfectly fitting our boxes, but that sounds great, too. Finally, we have seat cushions that fit perfectly both in and on our cabinets, so you can use it as a bench as well. Walk in the door, have a seat, kick off your shoes, crank up your favorite tunes, and have a glass of wine. Life is good! Most of the images on our site have been pretty monochromatic so far, but that's about to change! Not that there is anything wrong with black, white & wood, but Spring is here and our flowers are showing us how nice purple and green and pink can be. Stacy has been working on some new pieces that are going to be super cool. We have a new line coming out this summer that will be available in almost any color or pattern you can dream of. Please tell us (publicly or privately) which colors you would like to see us offer. Let's brighten our worlds!
We have been talking about paint colors in the last few posts. Here is an anecdote that amuses us: After we replaced the siding on our own house, we painted it a very dark brown, bringing it into the background and giving it a quiet presence on the street. We discovered that this color was very close to the original color the house had. We gave it a hot accent color on the beam, though. This is always fun to do on Eichler houses. We did this 10 years ago. At the time, ours was the only house in the neighborhood with an orange beam. It was also one of the few dark houses. Then a house-flipper across the street copied our colors. Then the new owners of another house further down the street painted their beam orange. Slowly, more houses have toned down their color schemes and added orange beams. There are at least 8 of them in our neighborhood now. Here are few of them: We can't say how much, or even if, we influenced these homeowners, but we like to think we helped by setting an example.
